Introduction

In 2011, the City launched a Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program to promote walking and bicycling to school for Mountain View students and families. Our currently program is supported by a grant from the 2016 VTA Measure B Education/Encouragement Program. 

Why Walk and Roll to School

Walking and biking to school keeps children happy, healthy and focused. It establishes healthy habits and an active lifestyle that is more likely to continue as children age. It promotes social inclusion, functional independence and spatial intelligence. And it improves transportation safety, reduces traffic congestion and helps us all combat climate change.

How to Walk and Roll to School

Suggested Routes to School maps are created for Mountain View public schools to show preferred routes for walking or bicycling to/from school.

Please consider creating a "walking school bus" or "bike train" so you can walk or ride together.

How to Get Involved

Join the Safe Routes Coordinating Committee

We need your help to keep us all healthy and safe!  Please consider joining the Safe Routes to School Coordinating Committee to help us develop and effectively implement the SRTS program. As a Transportation Safety Rep for your school, you can help by: 

• Providing feedback to City staff on capital and design improvements near schools;
• Leading safety and encouragement events (walk and roll events, SRTS tabling, bus to school day);
• Become a partner with Mountain View schools and the City to improve safety near school; and 
• Building community with other parents around transportation safety.

Crossing Guards

There are 21 funded crossing guard locations in Mountain View.  City of Mountain View and Mountain View Whisman School District (MVWSD) fund the crossing guards in Mountain View. Please click here for the list of crossing guard locations.
