The information provided by the Hazardous Materials Inventory Statement (HMIS) is used by Fire Protection staff in the Building Division to assist in quantifying the hazardous materials, per hazard class and method of storage per hazard class, in a building or building area.

The type of hazardous material, the amount stored, and how it is stored or used assists in determining the appropriate occupancy classification of the building or building area. Providing this information with a building/fire permit application  will allow us to determine applicable code requirements efficiently.

The information provided may also assist in determining whether the amounts are exempt from being considered a hazardous (H) occupancy. Areas such as laboratories, manufacturing and assembly areas, storage areas, auto body and repair shops are a few examples of places where hazardous materials might be used or stored. Note: All projects requiring the completion of a Declaration of Exemption or Hazardous Materials Management Plan (HMMP) are required to complete the HMIS form.

If you are uncertain as to whether a project requires the completion of a Hazardous Materials Inventory Statement, please contact the Building Division at 650-903-6313 or Hazardous Materials staff in the Fire and Environmental Safety Division at 650-903-6378.
